Firefox 8.0.1 crashes randomly after launch - 5m to 30m after startup. Safemode crashes the same. Windows 7. Everything up to date. Been crashing this way for the last 2 months.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Hi N411JL,
Note use of safe mode does not disable plugins so when troubleshooting in safe mode fails you should also, whilst in safe mode, disable all plugins and use only the default theme.

The empty string crashes are difficult to troubleshoot. You could, as a last resort, try filing a bug to see if any knowledgeable coder or triager is able to assist, but before considering that

  1. the first thing to try to eliminate is that it is a malware problem,
  2. the second is to consider a reinstall.

Created a profile with minimum carried over from the default. Moved places, one back up file, cookies and urlclassifier. Had to reconstruct all the sites I normally keep open - like 40+. No malware on computer. All the extensions were disabled. Plugins include: Microsoft Office, Google Earth, iTunes detector, Quick TIme, RIM application loader, Jave, Google update and Shockwave Flash. Earlier did a uninstall and reinstall which caused upgrade to 8.0.1.

Still crashes but less frequently - maybe 2X a day.

In safe mode and with default themes and no plugins if you still crash what are the crash IDs ?

Is there any noticeable pattern, for instance, are they always on sites using Flash Player, or always on the same site ?

Do you have either Roboform (version 7.6.1 or older?) or Trusteer Rapport extension?. As both have been known to cause crashes upon Firefox startup.

Negative on both.

I will need to run tests on Safe mode but do have at least one crash dump in Safe Mode.

Re: Is there any noticeable pattern, for instance, are they always on sites using Flash Player, or always on the same site ?

I have not investigated the sites as to content but would be sure this includes flash. Right now I have 43 sites open, some which refresh on 5 min cycles, but only a few. I have not been able to correlate crashes with the sites and content - note that these sites are on different tabs. When the crash occurs it is from the one windows running with all the tabs. There is no correlation between my activity and the crash. I cannot discert any auctions on my part and the crash. In fact, most of the crashed happen when I am gone from the computer and come back and see the crash splash screen.

Do you need all the 43 sites open all the time ?

What happens if you open firefox offline and with only a blank page open, presumably that does not then crash ?

Maybe as a troubleshooting exercise bookmark them in folders of ca 5 sites and then try with only half of the 43 open then compare if the other half is open, before splitting the groupings again. By bisecting you may be able to narrow it down to one or more specific sites causing the problem. It is faster - taking less test cycles - testing in groups; than doing one tab at a time and building up from one to 43 tabs, or testing each tab individually. (If it crashes after 5 to 30 minutes, it is probably best to test any combination over an hour or so, to be sure it does not crash - but at least I note you say it crashes unattended so that may mean less effort is involved in testing.)

Crash ID: bp-f0aedfa6-bf39-4a0b-b42f-82fa82111205

Safe Mode Crash ID

Crashed while not in use - window was open.

The Crash ID is not helping, it is reporting an empty signature due to a corrupt crash dump. You say crashed while not in use window was open, as I asked before does it even crash with a blank tab (key in about:blank in the location bar) and when offline. If so it seems likely either Firefox related files are corrupt or you have malware.

If you have already tried checking for malware, or known problem software, and the fresh profile, then as I suggested above a clean reinstall with deletion of the program folders is the next step.

In fact in that situation I myself would next go one further and move the existing profile folder with sub folders and files to a location outside the firefox paths, that would leave all your data passwords and bookmarks unavailable and firefox would do a totally clean reinstall. YOU WILL LOOSE DATA if you try that, but certainly the bookmarks would be easy enough to re-install, and in any event I would back them up manually anyway before a re-install. You may be able to get cookies back and even passwords and logins, but I would list the passwords and logins and copy them either by pen and paper, or by keying into a text file.

Clearly a browser that crashes multiple times a day is not much use, I do not think I would have put up with that for a couple of months.

I am out of suggestions other than those above, but maybe someone else has ideas ?

I am by the way assuming it is only the browser crashing, and that your OS remains up and running ok ??
