The sidebar window is openinf web sites instead of showing the bookmarks. Why is it doing that?

I went to view and clicked on sidebar. I wanted to see the bookmarks all the time. Instead, whenever I double click an address, the site opens in the sidebar windows. The home page is displayed and the home page tab box does not respond to accept a new address.
