Having found the prompt referred to in my previous question, I am not allowed to replace the old version in my apps folder because of some lack of permissions. How now, brown cow?
I'm installing the update 4.0.1. After dragging the firefox icon into the image of the apps folder and being asked if I want to continue--because the old one will be overwritten, I'm guessing,--I say yes and am then unable to complete this mission because of a lack of some permissions. How can I give myself the permission I need in order to complete this urgent update? Thanks, Mary

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
- Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
- Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.
DMG file? I may need for you to speak more slowly, cor-el. I'm stumped. I just tried to do what I think you said, but I'm still getting the issue with permissions.
The DMG file is the Disk Image file that you downloaded from the Mozilla server (Firefox 4.0.1.dmg).
Did you mange to download the version that you want to install?
Did you trash the current Firefox version?
You either need to repair the permissions to make replacing (updating) work or trash the current Firefox installation. The latter is usually easier and faster and you want to remove that version anyway.
