Firefox is taking up a unbelievable amount of RAM. It uses on average 87% of my notebook's 1 gig when checked under my process' mem usage. Is this the way this browser is supposed to run?

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

No it is not under normal browsing conditions. Can I ask how many tabs you have open and whether you have disabled the following plugins?

Winamp Application Detector Yahoo Application State Plugin NPWLPG Windows Presentation Foundation BlackBerry WebSL Browser Plug-In

Alright, so I disabled the plugins.

This improoved the function of Firefox. The browser is only one window with one tab playing a video off of youtube. The mem required for the process is now only 40%-55%

This is a great improovement but can we do any better?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems See [[Basic Troubleshooting|#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting:Make a new profile]]

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files) See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
