Lost bookmarks where to put the places.sqlite-wal file
I messed up. After downloading the latest version an erroer [failed to read config file came up each time I started. So I googled and the common answer was to reinstall. Idiot that I am I did notg back up bookmarks etc and so lost them all. I uised Recuva to retrieve deleted files and found 2 files places.sqlite-wal and places.sqlite.shm Is there any way to put these in the new Mozilla somewhere? I write now and all my research links were in there. Would be great to get them back somehow.

You may not need to use Recuva, usually Firefox doesn't delete your profile data even if you uninstall it. I think you'd have had to go in and manually delete the data to actually lose it.
Take a look at Recovering important data from an old profile. It explains how you can find the old data (if it exists) and how to move it over to your current install/profile.
places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal are SQLite temp files (wal: Write-Ahead Logging; shm: Shared Memory files). You need the actual places.sqlite file to recover your bookmarks and history.
Are you using a autoconfig.cfg file that contains calls to the Services object?
