either i am stupid or did not understand in the left hand side it does not say calendar and in view it is greyed out and i still see the today's pane in the status bar i do not need or use the calendar

Go to the Calendar tab and delete ALL calendars. When you have only one calendar remaining and it doesn't let you delete it, right-click the calendar, select Properties and untick the checkbox that enables that calendar. The today pane won't show up when there are no active calendars.

Look at the attached screenshot. The red arrow points at the Calendar icon. If you hover your mouse pointer on it, it says switch to the calendar tab. Left-click on it and the Calendar tab will open. In that tab, in the left pane, your calendars will be listed. Right-click each calendar listed there and delete them.

You turned off the Calendar pane. Turn it back on as follows:

Go to the View menu → Calendar → Calendar Pane → Show Calendar Pane. Make sure it's ticked. With the Calendar Pane visible on the left of the Calendar tab, you should see a list of Calendars, with at least one calendar listed.
