Why does THUNDERBIRD strip all the embedded graphics from an e-mail when I send it to others or add a graphics file? The PC is running WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM, which was getting all the MICROSOFT updates during its lifetime.

Here's an actual situation: I do LADDER programming for Programmable Logic Controllers. I had an issue with the Editor, and so I contacted the company's Tech Service Dept. An agent e-mailed me back, asking me to make a Screen Shot of the problem that I experienced & send it to him with some other information for him to review. I did it no problem. When I looked at the e-mail in my THUNDERBIRD 'Sent folder', only the text that I typed was present. All the graphics, etc. had been stripped away.

This has also occurred when I've forwarded technical articles about electronics circuits and/or components. And, it has occurred when I've forwarded online newspaper items as well.

This NEVER happened with former releases of THUNDERBIRD, so I know that something has been changed in the basic operation of the program. Thank you.

re :Why does THUNDERBIRD strip all the embedded graphics from an e-mail when I send it to others or add a graphics file?

If you compose an email in HTML but your settings are not set up to send HTML then email is sent as Plain Text which strips all formatting and images are appended as attachments. Check the 'Send Options'

  • Menu app icon > Preferences > Composition
  • In 'HTML Style' section - click on 'Send Options' button
  • uncheck 'Send messages as plain text if possible'
  • Select 'Send the message in both plain text and HTML'
  • click on OK.

If you add image then is it an image you created or one you copy pasted from perhaps a website page ?

When adding image did you do this: Insert > Image Click on 'Choose file' and select the image Then you must select 'attach this image to the message' before clicking on OK otherwise you are just attaching a file reference which is not likely to be accessed by recipient, so they will not see any image.

If you are using Copy Paste method and image was on webpage then perhaps you are also copy pasting all the hidden formatting which may include remote content. If recipient does not allow remote content then they would see broken file and no image. Perhaps you are only pasting the http link info so still need to set up the image is attached option. If copy pasting image from webpage: paste in image, then double click on image to open 'Image Properties' window where you can select 'attach this image to the message' and then click on OK

Hopefully this info may help you.
