Hello, I am now using Thunderbird 78.12.0 on a new MacMini with M1 and BigSur. Under the settings I have selected Automatically follow detected online state. But that options doesnot seem to work. Do I miss something? For security reasons I work as a user with Locations ; one location for Internet and Intranet, the other for only Intranet. In the “only Intranet” Location I have made both my Ethernet and my Wifi connection “inactive”, following the option “Make service inactive”.

So your network is still active in both scenarios. So your Thunderbird is following the network state. It is active, so Thunderbird is online.

Really Matt, There is a big difference between activity on a LAN and activity on the internet. In my opinion "online state" doesnot refer to Local network activity. Or is "automatically follow detected ONLINE state" wrongly formulated, and should it have been "detected NETWORK state"? Regards, Huib J. Plankeel

If you think it is wrong, you are welcome to file a bug requesting a change. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home

There is a meta bug for managing this type of bug report here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678947 to which all associated bug are marked as blocking.

A check of the depends on: bugs would be advisable so you know what other bugs are already files in the matter. There is no point filing a duplicate. Someone will only close is as such.

How so? At a low level (where networkling really occurs) the same protocols and packet switching is being used. Just that one part of local and another is not, usually with a router sitting guard on the gate between the two.

I would say that online state follows if your computer is connected to a network. If you mail server was located on the local network (what you are calling an intranet) I am guessing your definition would be different. In that scenario, using your definition, Thunderbird would not get mail from the local server because it was not "online".

I suggest you examine what apple says in their documentation. https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/mac-help/mchlp1175/mac

What they refer to are networks and there is a reason for that. While each may be limited by it's definition as to what will work or where it will connect to, there is not really any difference to your mac. It is just another network. You calling it say "intranet" does not make it anything special or "offline".
