several years of mails disappeared
I just discovered that many older archive folders in Thunderbird are empty where there should be tons of mails that I wanted to keep. Sometimes when searching something, I was able to see old mails in the preview list but not open them. I wondered why. Now I discovered that the folders are empty or seem empty. I have no idea why. There are no settings set to auto delete or reduction rules. What can I do to recover my mails?

I've had a similar problem which I am not sure is related, but might be:
I have a bunch of old emails that I'd like to archive. They're sorted in various ways in a number of subfolders. I try to copy those subfolders directly to the archive, and they disappear from BOTH places. They're no longer in their original subfolders, but they're not in the archive folder either. As far as I can tell, they no longer exist anywhere.
I should add that I'm reluctant to try to reproduce this problem. I have no idea what other emails, even unrelated ones, may be affected. I've done Repair Folders on these beforehand and it didn't seem to matter.
