I'm using OS 10.12.6 I installed some theme and it made the background black. With brown text...Very handy for reading.

To add for clarity's sake: changing themes doesn't help.

Sorry, I was misled by your reference to a 'theme'. A theme (as I understand it) changes the browser's appearance so it seemed to me, after replying, that you must have installed something else. Do you have a link to what you installed? It may have changed the colours/colors settings on the General page of Preferences. People have been having various problems with colours since 'dark' schemes became a fad.
