I have been dealing with this issue for a long time. I tell Thunderbird to delete ll messages after 7 days, except for starred messages and NEVER does. I really think it has to do with Google servers to KEEP all messages for marketing reason, which really frigging pisses me off. I have set this time and time again and does not do what it is told. So I ask myself why are we even using this product when it doesn't work. I think the only way to get this to delete messages if I log in directly and delete them from there. Which makes Thunderbird look bad because it doesn't do what it is instructed to do. If you can not delete messages or retain your settings then either tell people or remove your software off the market. NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is bad enough there are tons of garbage software on the market already.

Actually I found out from google Google mail. The default settings that are NOT changeable, and is to archive all messages, so what I suspected was correct, that they keep your messages for some sort of marketing purposes. Which really speaking, is nasty. Why can they not just delete these messages when asked.

The funny thing is once before I cleaned out just about all my messages, and now it seems like this is not possible, I will have to look into this further. Does this mean that I will have to delete my accounts and go with someone else, just to be sure that my email is private, secure and deleted when asked. Why else, would you want to hang on to old email. It is bad enough that they sell my email addresses to highest bidders, and for all I know these are spammers. Instead of hanging on to old email, they should look into getting rid of junk email once and for all.

Perhaps you need to log into gmail and change the default setting to allow mail clients to actually delete mail. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/fwdandpop

The setting is to delete mail when accessed using pop. Or you cold set to to archive which will remove the inbox tag, but leave it in the all mail folder on gmail. Those are your options. Gmail simply ignored the DELE command when issued by a mail client.
