Thunderbird 78.8 stopped working on Mac Mini running 10.13 High Sierra

When I try to Get Messages, it says it can't connect to my server, pop.rcn.com, but I can get into my webmail on Firefox, and my mail is there, and there are no problems with the server.

It stopped the other day as well, and I restarted, and it came back. Today, that didn't work.

I can't upgrade the Mac to 10.15 because I am running Photoshop CS6 with the last generation of Knoll Light Factory for Photoshop, and it won't work after 10.14.

Help there rperless. We have read your message. We try to help you

The Mac mini with high os Sierra or high Sierra. High Sierra or Sierra. Try to restart Thunderbird and Os with add- ons disabled. That’s possible?

But your programs on your Os has to be put by the backups or this fix won t work. Is this possible? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode.

You can check in safe modus if your problems did go away. If not it s something else in your mac mini system. I might be that..it s your Server settings.

First you have to check if your Smtp settings are oke with the server. Try to see if there are some mistakes by entering these values. The cannot connect to your server, has to be fixed first before next steps to run.

The Software as I ment can go to your backup place ,usb or hdd. Or neither will work to solve this.

I don't understand what you are saying. Thunderbird was working fine. Then I did a backup on Time Machine and the next day it stopped working. Could that have anything to do with it? When you say "put by the backups" do you mean I have to disconnect my backup drive? Or do you mean I have to install it in the backup?

The smpt settings must be ok, because I can get my webmail from the provider on Firefox. It's just Thunderbird that no longer works. And it's a pop box, with smpt outgoing.

https://downdetector.com/status/rcn/ So there are some issues.

What are the server settings currently selected? Please post info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting information 'Mail and News Accounts' section Copy all info and paste it into this forum question.

When you try to connect what is the entire error message word for word?

Hello there again.rperless.

There went something wrong after having a pop- up message from the server that you use. From your Server that settings maybe ain’t Allright. The question was can you go into Thunderbird change the settings? We know that Firefox is still running that was oke.

You guys want to safe your stuff ! Yes oké I ment put your stuff from Photoshop in a safe place before solving the problem with your connection to this server or other symptomes or went there more problems and pop-up s at the moment of having messages from Poprcn.com?

We do have to know about these information. Outgoing / incoming errors.

Sometimes add ons out of date causes freezing or stopping to get Thunderbird. Firewall setting can create also the same issues . Disable them both and try to start up in safe modus for Thunderbird to run short diagnostics for your system and software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode

about getting to your Mac mini s settings for your mail server.

Use Server Settings preferences in Mail to change options for an account's incoming and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers. To change these preferences in the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, then click Server Settings.

I called Apple and a Senior Advisor told me to disconnect my peripherals (printers and a Probox running 4 hard drives, including one for backup by Time Machine) and restart. After I did this, Thunderbird started up again.

How it did this, I have no idea, but I'll bet you guys know, and I would love to hear what you think happened.

My incoming server is pop.rcn.com on port 110, security None, Authentication Password Transmitted Insecurely

Outgoing is smtp.rcn.com on port 587, user name perless security None, AuthenticationPassword Transmitted Insecurely

We had another outgoing that is still on the iphones and the other computer but we changed it to make the webmail work.

that was mail.optonline.net, on port 587 user name perless, security None, authentication Password transmitted insecurely

I'm not getting the can't connect message but I believe it said "Cannot connect server pop.rcn.com does not recognize"

Toad-Hall, I don't understand what you are saying about posting this information in Troubleshooting information 'Mail and News Accounts' section. I don't see a place to post it. the error message precisely says:

"Could not connect to server pop.rcn.com; the connection was refused."

But the correct information is in the server information on Account Settings/Server Settings.

Sometimes unplugging peripherals and restarting works, sometimes it does not. Right not it does not.

I mean: Click on the menu app icon - it has 3 horizontal lines. Click on 'Help' Click on 'Troubleshooting Information' This opens in a new tab Scroll down to the section 'Mail and News Accounts' Highlight all that section - right click on highlighted text and select 'Copy'

Had you just updated Thunderbird from a 68* version to a 78* version when this all occurred ?

re :My incoming server is pop.rcn.com on port 110, security None, Authentication Password Transmitted Insecurely

Is there any particular reason why you are using an insecure set of settings when a more secure option is available? They are listed on the website help pages. https://help.rcn.com/portal/articles/2136

  • Server name: pop.rcn.com
  • Port 995
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Norma Password
  • User name: full email address

IF this problem started after an update from 68 to 78 then please try the following because the RCN server might be using out of date protocols. It could still be using TLSv1.2

Follow the advise at this link to reset the minimum to allow out of date protocols. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-78-faq#w_after-upgrading-to-thunderbird-78-i-cannot-receive-or-send-email-messages

more options

1. On insecure settings: that is what RCN told me to use when I opened the account. I will speak to them about changing the settings.

2. I had not recently updated to 78.8. I have been running it for a while. My computer alters me to upgrades and installs them. What was new was Photoshop CS6, which I have trashed, and my mail appears to be working again.

3. Here's the Mail and News Accounts Info:

account1 (pop3) pop.rcn.com:110 None Normal password mail.optonline.net:587 None Normal password true smtp.rcn.com:587 None Normal password false account2 (none) Local Folders None Normal password account3 (imap) mail.peerlesswindsystems.com:143 STARTTLS Normal password mail.peerlesswindsystems.com:587 STARTTLS Normal password true

more options

BTW, peerless wind systems no longer exists. I didn't know how to remove it. But the site has been taken down, so there is no longer mail.

Toad-Hall, I just spoke to RCN and nobody is there on Saturday who knows anything in the tech department. Even though I selected the rcn outgoing server as the default, you see it shows it as false and the optonline server as true. So I went back to the optonline server as Default outgoing, and I will call them on Monday.

The mail went down again, so taking out CS6 didn't fix the problem. There is still something wrong. Suggestions, please.

Tried to run Disk Warrior 5. It came back with an error message "cannot rebuild disk. Hardware failure 5, 1507." Alsoft is closed until Monday.

more options

That error message does not sound too good as it implies your hard drive is failing. Suggest you try to get backup copies of any important files before it dies.

EXit Thunderbird and get a backup of the Thunderbird folder located in the Library. If in default location it will be here: Mac OS X Profile folders are located here:

  • ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/<Profile name>/

The tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder.

Hi, Toad-Hall, this is Ellen for Robert. The alsoft help doesn't deal with our problem. The hard drive is an extended journaled 1 T disk. There is a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive but it probably has whatever the problem is on there. We will save the Thunderbird folder in the Library on another external disk. I am wondering if we have inadvertently downloaded a virus. I don't know what Robert's anti-virus software is. I know everybody says that Macs don't get viruses, but...

The other programs are working, but the computer is kind of slow. I know that the mail settings are correct because the webmail works on Firefox, both incoming and outgoing.
