I just updated Firefox on my Mac to Firefox 86.0 and the app itself became named Firefox 2. When it is running the name on dock is now Firefox 2.

I tried to change it back to plain Firefox (removing the space character and 2 from its name in the Application folder).

When I did that an relaunched it the display looked a bit weird and all of my bookmarks were gone!

Changing it back to Firefox 2 made it well again. I have never, ever seen Firefox do this.

Hmm, it sounds like Firefox might be installed in two places, and that needs to get cleaned up somehow.

When you run Firefox or Firefox 2, you can open the Troubleshooting Information page and find the "Application Binary" row of the first table. That should tell you where Firefox is running from. The "Profile Folder" row should tell you the location of the profile in use -- one has your stuff, one doesn't, so it's important to know which one you need to keep.

To open that page, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

P.S. As a Windows person, I'm not sure I would know what to suggest for actually cleaning up the situation, but knowing where things stand seems like the first step.

There's only one version of Firefox in the app folder and it is Firefox 2 and that's what the Mozilla installation named as I could see in the install logs.

The info in the files that were downloaded to update Firefox refer to Firefox 2 ...
