Hi

I have now several times experienced that Thunderbird suddenly uses 100% of my 4 CPUs. Very slowly I manage to close Thunderbird (both the main window and the new email I am writing). Then after about a minute I get the 'send crash report' pop-up window and I write a small comment before sending. Now I have discovered that the CPU abuse starts when I am about to write a new email message. It starts the moment I choose a mailing list (from the Address book) as the recipient for the new mail. I think the problem only used to happen sometimes, but now it's every time. Making it impossible to write mails to a group of people...! How do we solve this? As fast as possible. Would it help to do some kind of reinstall of Thunderbird - that doesn't affect all my data? And how? I am using Thunderbird 52.8.0 (64-bit) under Ubuntu v.18.04. And I am relatively new to Ubuntu/linux.

At first it seemed that switching to TB60Beta solved the problem, but now, on TB 60.0b10 (64-bit), the exact same problem is back again! I very much look forward to a solution! It's not very feasible that Thunderbird starts using 80% of the CPU when you start composing a message to a mailing list from your built-in address book. And the CPU abuse continues long after you sent the message. Seemingly until you shut down TB, and then you get the Mozilla Crash Reporter pop-up window.

Addition August 17, 2018:

Now I have tried starting Windows 10 Pro - Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134, which, for some reason, runs Thunderbird v.52.9.1 (32-bit), and not 64-bit, and there are no problems. So it's the combination of any 64-bit TB and Ubuntu 18.04 that creates the problem.

Addition August 22, 2018:

It seems there is a workaround: If the 'To:'-indicator is changed to "Bcc:' on the pull-down menu BEFORE entering a recipient (the name of the mailing list) in the corresponding field, then TB v.52.9.1 (64-bit) (under Ubuntu 18.04.1.LTS) does NOT start using 100% of the CPU! And then you can start writing the message.

can to try the TB60 beta? Reading over the bugs for the crashes, it looks like a fix went into FF56. I see no uplift to TB ESR, so the fix will not appear in Thunderbird until TB60

OK. Thank you! Being new to Ubuntu (v.18.04) how do I install TB60, and how can I get back to my present TB v.52.8.0 (64-bit) if something is wrong? I suppose I should backup my profile first!?

Yes! Switching to TB60 beta v.60.0b9 (64-bit) seems to solve the problem. But 7 of my add-ons are incompatible with TB60 and disabled... So this is quite tiresome! Might there be some updated versions of the add-ons that are not installed automatically? Or can I switch back to using TB v.52.9.0 on the profile, after it has been modified by TB60, in order to use my add-ons?

PS: I found TB60 here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/beta/all/ Unfortunately it could not be found in the beta-PPA: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/thunderbird-next (See also https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1210695 ) I also needed to copy my user profile, use "Create profile" in the Profile Manager and edit "profiles.ini" as described under "Moving a profile" in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data And I don't know any other way of starting TB60 than in Terminal. All in all somewhat tiresome.

That's one reason I stopped using Ubuntu (Unity was the other!) It was too hard to run test versions of Thunderbird.

Some distros place Thunderbird's executable files in /opt, rather than deeply embedded into the usual /lib, /bin and /usr directories.

So you might download and install the tar.bz2 file into the /opt folder and then manually reset your launchers to point to it. Note that it can be hard work disentangling all the other places where the "official" installation is referenced.

OK. Thanks. My TB60 is placed in /home/henrik/thunderbird60beta/thunderbird So how can I create a new icon/launcher for TB60?

Please post list of addons. In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'Copy list to clipboard' button Paste in this forum question and edit everything except the Addon Extension list.

OK. Here comes the add-ons that TB60 has disabled. Not all of them are very important. The most important are EmailPicky 4, Mailbox Alert, Use Bcc Instead, (and ThunderPlunger?):

REmove Duplicate messages: There is a more up to date one you could try:


Use Bcc Instead - Thunderplunder: sorry but these are definately not being updated for version 60.

GlodaQuilla stopped being updated on version 24 but may have been able to function up until now. Note; these search options may be part of TB. Folder properties allows you to select to 'include messages in this fodler in global Search results.' Although the option 'inherit' is not available.

'Find' > 'Search Messages' search on any folder or group of folders to include subfolders if required

But does not add columns to help with debugging for developers - but I'm not sure if that was what you used it for.

The crash is described in bug 1378091 / https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1376874 which, as you have found, is fixed in version 60.

I don't understand what you are trying to say?

Are you talking about a way of solving the original 100% CPU use problem without having to switch to TB60 beta? Or are you talking about a way of enabling certain add-ons in TB60? Or what?
