Hi,

On the 19th of March, for some reason, i started to receive the error: the bookmarks and history system will not be functional because on of firefox's files are in use by another application.

Solutions i've tried:

-Creating a new database (solution 2 when clicking on the 'Learn more' button) -safe mode booting (problem still persists) -running chkdsk and memory diagnostics (no problems) -uninstalling and reinstalling -ive also tried to system restore but i get an error 0x81000204 so I wasnt able to restore it.

I dont really care about my bookmarks, but my history contains some important reference links I need.

I run Windows 8.1pro with what seems to be the most up to date Firefox.

Hi, try : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's(WIn10)) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0.1 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I did the above, still the same red bar error message on the top of the page.

Firefox automatically makes backups of your bookmarks unless you turn it off. Nothing else is saved.

I recommend you save those as bookmarks soon. If you don't want to misplace them, create a new folder to put them in.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

What's your computer system and Firefox version?

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

normally the file should be accessible when you boot in Windows Safe Mode.

Boot the computer in Safe Mode and see if you can repair places.sqlite.

If you can't repair places.sqlite then you will likely lose history unless your previous actions already destroyed your previous places.sqlite.

Are other files in the profile folder updated when you run Firefox?

You may have to create a new profile if the problems persist.

I've created a new profile earlier and booted in safe mode, but it still didnt work,

That was Windows Safe Mode, yes? Normally with the computer in Safe Mode, only system programs are running.

Can you provide a screenshot of the red box you spoke of?

I dont mine bitcoin so i dont think its that. Also im not sure what else could be keeping it open.

I downloaded malwarebytes and superantispyware, both came up with minor adware issues which i removed. I also scanned with bitdefender which came up with no issues.

I think i might resort to using a different browser now..

Thank you guys for your help though
