Any time I go to a website, the url contains https. When I try to change that manually, it reverts to https. The encryption is clogging up my browser and causing crashes. I want to turn off the automatic encryption but keep it for obvious sites like banking.

https links means it is a secured connection. I don't think it can be turned off.

Please explain in detail what the problem is.

Thanks much for the reply. My situation seemed to be different. FF converted URLs with no "s" to https. I could not get rid of the "s" manually, either. That's been the case for a number of days. But just now I tried working with a different search engine and the problem seems to have gone away. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I appreciate your help! elizabeth

It is possible that you experienced issues caused by HSTS priming. Recently Mozilla has released a hotfix that disabled this feature ("Send HSTS Priming Requests" in the System Details list).

Cor-el--thanks for the help. If the problem hasn't gone away [as it might have], then I'll give your suggestion a try tomorrow. Appreciate the help. e.
