start any download, hit ctrl-j, goto "downloads" tag, and right before dl runs out , the numbers switch to a text: "a few seconds remaining"... no. dont do that.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a download manager.

Sorry, that's the way it is - no user "hack" is available to get around that. There's a security feature in Firefox that "waits" for the user's security application to complete scanning the download for viruses before showing the download is complete.
