When trying to start Firefox, the Mozilla crash reporter appears instead
latest Crash ID: bp-f77b5fde-3d45-48c7-846e-cdab02160913
Hi there
Firefox worked fine until midday today. But now, when trying to start Firefox, the Mozilla crash reporter appears instead. I have not installed any new applications or add-ons for a long time (more than a year).
I have done a clean install of the newest Firefox version. I also have tried to run it in safe mode, but that immediately got me back to the crash reporter. And now, the 'Firefox Safe Mode' box only appears for a fraction of a second, so I do not have enough time to click on the 'Start in Safe Mode Button'.
I use Norton Internet Security and I have have run a full scan, but no problems were detected.
I still use XP, since the available colors of the newer Windows versions trigger my epilepsy (with XP, I can set each color exactly).
What else can I do?
Thank you, Rose
I have clicked on the "Troubleshooting Information: Automatically add" button, that resulted in the message "We're sorry, but we can't find what you're looking for." I am using Google Chrome for this support question, since obviously I cannot do it via Firefox as long as it does not start.

hi rose, thanks for providing a crash report id. we have seen quite a number of similar reports about this issue in the last hours and this issue is likely caused by your symantec security software that is hooking into firefox (probably through a program/signature update done by them). other users reported that updating firefox in this situation helped with the crashes. you can download & install the latest firefox from https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-48.0.2-sha1&os=win&lang=en-US

We are all screwed! The last time I allowed Symantec to "troubleshoot" something on my computer (2011) I had to reinstall the entire operating system! They are hopeless and will never admit they are causing the problem.
But, to be fair, I always suspected that crash was caused by NAV running when Windows Update kicked in. Along those lines, I would just as soon suspect MICROSOFT, who is intent upon SPYING ON US ALL!! I will not let them run "automatic updates" on my computer, the one which now LIES to people who choose not to update and it starts the update, anyway. So, perhaps I am targeted.
I suggest Mozilla check out the openness vs protectiveness of the users who are having the problem. You might find a common situation.
Guess I will be FORCED to get a new computer. This time will be an APPLE or UNIX, after 35 years, I've had it with Mr. Gate's copycat dream!
sign me a CCP (1991) & CIO but scared to publish my name!
As far as what had changed on my computer, last night before I went to bed, while computer was sleeping and wireless disabled, I let Charter Communications mess with my network, "resyncing" and they are doing quite a bit of data-gathering (spying) lately. They are my #1 suspect, but I could never prove it without a device attached to their equipment and a team of programmers!
How many are using cable modems?
Hi philipp
Thanks very much for your help. I did a clean install of the FF version you recommended and I now have FF back. But now the problem is that "All add-ons have been disabled by safe mode." That's a big problem for me. How can I enable them again? And where is the add-on toolbar that was in continuous use?
Thanks, Rose
thanks for following up rose, just closing firefox and starting it again normally should get you out of safemode then...
Hi again philipp
Thanks, that worked brilliantly. I have my favorite colors back (anything in a certain range of blue wavelength triggers my epilepsy immediately). Here's a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG HUG for you...
Thanks again, you're a star! Rose :o)
PS: The newest FF version that I referred to in my original post and which I downloaded from the Mozilla website was 43.0.1. So that seems to be considerably older than the version you guided me to. Was that because I had to use Google Chrome (which I hate using - always have to cover the top of my screen to get rid of the blue heading). PPS: When I said "midday", that was British time. It's just after 6 in the evening here now.
