Junk filters stop working, have to run manually

I have been using Thunderbird for a number of years. I usually leave it running 24-7. When it starts it filters junk just fine, but after a day or so it stops filtering. I can use the menu item "Tools->Run Junk Mail Controls on Folder" and it will process the Inbox and move a lot of emails to the Junk folder. At this point it will continue to automatically process junk emails for a while and will then stop processing again.
