I'm kind of confused about all this and I'm afraid that several factors come in to play. I hope that someone can help me understand. I have been using tb for years and have been a big fan. I have used pop and most recently imap. I'm having problems with my tags. I lose them on a regular basis and I'm not sure why. I think that happens when the server - RE-downloads my messages which seems to happen on a regular basis. Are there settings that I may be missing that would control all these losses or how many times the messages have to be downloaded? Is it a server problem? Of course the hosting company blames in on TB. Is anyone else having this problem? Do any hosting companies keep the tags that you have placed from thunderbird? My hosting company is secureserver.net Please help, I've become very reliant on tags and have spent hours replacing them to only lose them again. Thank you, Teri

Tags in IMAP work about as well as the server lets them. Some IMAP servers support them, other do not. I assume yours does not.

I am being serious here even though it may not sound like it. Use one of the free mail providers like Google that supports tags, set the Google account to collect mail from your secure server.net server using the pop protocol so you do not need to manage the mail account at all.

Set the Google account to send mail as your email address (yes they support that) and use it instead.

Hmm. Thank you Matt. I'll try that. That means that I can access the web hosted mail on google from any device right? May just solve all kinds of problems. I have many folders on thunderbird. Is there an easy way to move them over. I think those messages are local though, not on the server anymore. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again. T

Right

That depends on how large the folders are, but your can drag and drop mail from local folders to IMAP account folders, but more than a few hundred at a time can lead to some getting lost.

Thanks again. T

With regard to Google, if you have an existing account, all is good. If you do not none of this will work with them until this bug is fixed. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=849540

That is intended to be in time for the version 38 release some time next month if all goes well.
