Firefox browser still blank even after complete reinstall

When I start Firefox, the browser window opens all white, which quickly turns all black. None of the menu items, tabs, buttons/bars are displayed in the top of the window - though the hotspots are there, hidden, because the hovering help appears if I make a guess with the cursor. If a lucky guess opens a new window, this is also completely black. 

I uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox but this has not fixed the problem. Internet Explorer is working just fine so I have switched to that as a temporary fix, but have lost my favourites.

Any ideas what to try next?

Sorry, please disable hardware acceleration as a temporary workaround. This is an incompatibility between Firefox 33 and some older graphics card/chipset drivers. More info: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1025438
