I get 'connection timed out' for all websites except google (search only, twitter and facebook(and only when accessed from the history of more than 1 month ago)

more options

I have tried about 8 different solutions, except possibly the DNS one mentioned on Mozillavine (using google DNS-thingamy instead of you ISP's) as I am not that technologically literate. HOwever, http://74.125.53.99 did not work anyway; Google is only good as my Mozilla home page.

I can only access facebook from a link in my history. Twitter will only load from links, within facebook (useless anyway as I don't use it) and I can search in Google but can't go to any of the results. it's always "connection timed out". www.google.com doesn't work either, it only works when it opens as my mozilla homepage (when I start the program)

IE doesn't work at all, Google Chrome will access facebook only

I am obviously using another computer to send this, so the below box I think is not relevant?..... Is that enough info? I really hope you can help

Many thanks for your time

Eden

Hi,

Are you plugged directly into your home network or are you using wireless? Assuming the network is configured correctly, it sounds like a proxy issue... Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Click Network and Internet, and then click Internet Options.

In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Connections tab.

Click the LAN Settings button.

If checked, un-check “Use a proxy server for your LAN

Then check "Automatically Detect Settings"

What kind of system is the problem system. Also Windows 7?

Some versions of Firefox may go offline if the network is spotty. Check that Firefox is not offline using the classic File menu. If you usually display the orange Firefox button, you can show the menu bar temporarily by tapping the Alt key. "Work Offline" appears toward the bottom.

Do you think malware is a possibility if all browsers are largely crippled? You could download some scanners to your working computer and copy them over to the struggling one. This article lists programs that Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
