First export bookmarks from safari to html file and second import that file to firefox:
Exporting bookmarks from Safari
Launch Safari then from the File menu select Export Bookmarks then safe the file to your computer. By default, Safari calls the file Safari Bookmarks.html(though the .html extension will probably be hidden).
Importing bookmarks from Safari to Firefox follow the instruction here:

thank you

Good evening ideato, Yes I have done it that way in the past. However Firefox V 8.0.1 does not have an "import" in the file menu. Have done all the bits out of Safari and have the .html file saved in the finder, but there does not appear to be any way to get the bookmarks from finder into Safari. Incidentally, the link provided for "Importing bookmarks from Safari to Firefox follow the instruction here:" results in a "Page Not Found" message. I think that I will decide to ditch Firefox as a browser. Thanks for trying
"import" in firefox is in library, not file menu
