Firefox for Mac, the History only works if Sidebar is left open.
The History list only works if we leave the sidebar open. If we close the sidebar, all previous history is deleted, and no new pages are added. Pages add only while the sidebar is open. Preferences are set for -- privacy, remember history. In Tools, private browsing is not enabled.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
