Sometimes I accidentally hit the wrong "x" on a tab and it closes it out. This is really fustrating when my mouse sticks and it closes out my college assignment I've been working on. I've checked all the setting and even went into about:config....no change. Any ideas?!

Have you tried going to the "History" menu and selecting "Recently Closed Tabs"? You should be able to reopen the tab from there.

If you use "Ctrl+Shift+T" immediately you should get the tab back, and the work you had been working on in the text boxes. Even worked here.

But filling in forms is notorious across all applications for losing your work if the application goes down.

What I find frustrating in this web forum is losing my work if I accidentally open a link or bookmark in the same tab, or use Back/Forward button in the tab, and try to return with the back/forward buttons, which usually loses my data.

You can hide the close buttons on all tabs or only show that button on the currently selected tab and close tabs with a middle-click instead.

See:

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.
