Preferences is not a selection in the options window
I clicked on options and was asked to select preferences and it was not there to select.

Preferences on Mac and Linux, Options on Windows. There's no Options > Preferences menu item.
If you are using Firefox 4 then you can find the check for updates button in Firefox > Help > About Firefox
