THANK YOU IT WORKED

Solution did not work for me. In fact, preferences were configured to not delete history or clear cache etc. Tried all possible combinations of privacy settings and still can't get AppTabs to persist between browser launches.

I had this problem, too. Here's how I solved it:

--Go into Options >> General >> Startup.

--I had "Show blank page"; changed it to "Show my windows and tabs from last time".

What I really want (and thought I was getting) are permanent pinned tabs -- I only want the "Show blank page" to apply to unpinned tabs.

Firefox Developers, you didn't read my mind! All kidding aside, thanks for all you do -- I'm very pleased w/ FF 4.

None of the above work for me... both of the suggestions (General>>Startup and it is not set to clear history) were already configuration the above suggested way in my browser... but tabs are still gone every time I close and restart Firefox. What's up?

There may be a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder

Delete sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.

You will have to redo App Tabs and Tab Groups after deleting sessionstore.js.

Previous Advice Flawed. Simple Solution Follows.

Don't bother with all the other advice here if you are just looking to maintain your app tabs whilst still clearing your browser history (i.e. - where you have been that has not been bookmarked, download history, etc.).

All you need is to do the following:

  1. Click "Options -> Privacy"
  2. Choose "Use custom settings for history" from "Firefox will:" drop-down menu. (You may need to UNCHECK "Permant Private Browsing Mode" and click OK, then reopen Options to get the containing column of check boxes to become accessible.)
  3. Check "Remember search and form history" (Note: even with cookies enabled, Firefox will NOT remember passwords, and websites will NOT recognize your computer unless this box is checked, thus, double bonus, WINNING!)
  4. Make certain "Remember my browsing history" & "Remember download history" are NOT checked (unless you want FF4 to do one of those for you), and that "Clear history when Firefox closes" is NOT checked.
  5. Click OK and enjoy the new and improved FF4 with App Tabs and no large cache files.
  6. WINNING!

Below, a screenshot to help make it clear.

One of the problems I've noticed is when a new window opens that is closed after the main window. It seems that the main window, with the app tabs, is lost and the session data from the secondary window, without the apptabs, is kept. This makes pop-up windows even more annoying than EVER. But, it also seems like something that could be accounted for and indicates that apptab data is being stored in the wrong place.

I had 'show my last windows and tabs' and when the system crashed, none of my pinned tabs came back.

That's twice this week, I lost the pinned tabs and it's getting quite frustrating to have to go back thru history when you have some tabs you didn't open today or yesterday.
