I like the new app tabs but wonder if they need to be created each time I open FF? Currently it seems that they are not being saved across sessions? Am I missing something?

Yes, App Tabs are meant to be saved across sessions. Have you set Firefox preferences to clear history automatically (Clear history when Firefox closes setting)? See this article: Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox.
Also, make sure that when you exit from Firefox, you select File > Exit menu.

sorry, not clear about that. I do not see anything relating to the App Tabs in there. To me App Tabs would be similar to the way I customise my toolbars or theme, so it should be clear to "fix" this somewhere irrespective of browsing history or cache.

Sorry for not making it very clear. If you select Clear history when Firefox closes setting, it forgets what tabs were open during your last session. So, when you re-open Firefox, it will only load your home page.
