pdf files blank when opened in browser on linux

I am running Ubuntu linux 8.04 and 10.04. When I open a PDF file in the browser, I get a blank screen. I am able to open the document in its own window. I am not getting any error message. I first had the problem on Ubuntu 8.04 using FF 3.6.15. I also have the problem on Ubuntu 10.04 using FF 3.6.15. I have installed FF 4.0b13pre on Ubuntu 10.04 and I still have the same problem.
