Have recently had two occasions of "ffupdate.conduit-services.com" suddenly wanting to set a cookie. I denied it. These have happened while FF 3.6.3 was open but NOT the active window, under up-to-date Snow Leopard on a current-model Macbook Pro. Any idea what this is???

I've had numerous cookie requests from ffupdate+conduit+services as well and Nothing I find via Google searches helps identify it so I keep denying it. I would appreciate someone from Mozilla posting a comment confirming whether or not this cookie is related to the Firefox browser.

That is probably related to a Conduit powered Toolbar that you installed into Firefox.
Those "Conduit" Toolbars are very controversial, they were removed en masse from the official addons website a few years ago in response to a Firefox user campaign to get them banned from the addons website due to a variety of problems those addons were causing for too many users. The biggest problem at that time was that a few of the the creators of those Toolbars were "gaming the system" to keep those toolbars near the top of the "new" list by creating virtually worthless "updates", some were being updated almost everyday. Only very recently has a few of those "Toolbars" been allowed the privilege of being hosted by the Mozilla Addons website, and "we" are watching them very carefully.
Interesting tidbit about Conduit toolbars. But ... how can we tell if the add-ons we've added ... on ... involve this suspect??
(Aside from that, this problem seems to have stopped - although I now have 7 of my 13 add-ons turned-off for various reasons.)
