Thunderbird - I've lost the GUI interface in all TB windows - now all text and no icons. Even "Tools\Options" is text format without normal graphics or icons.

Hi there, I've been mucking around in an attempt to fix one thing and in the process I've altered Thunderbird so that it has lost the ability to present any of its windows in GUI format - no icons and all appears to be text format. I also seem to have lost the ability to display HTML format email properly and have no idea if HTML format for new messages or replies, actually works. It all started because, after I installed Firefox and then duckduckgo over the top, the colours and lines of the web search page seemed washed out. Previously black lines became a light grey, with the search box in the middle of the web browser page almost invisible. To find it, I have to click somewhere in the approximate location so that the cursor provides the location on the screen. Other areas of the search screen as well as any graphics on the page were also washed out. The URL list resulting from the search was also a bit washed out, but the web pages that opened were normal including all pictures and text - obviously because that content lives somewhere else and away from my computer :-). Trying to "fix" the washed out colour issues, I managed to make some unwanted and mysterious changes to TB settings (how/where I have no idea) to the extent that TB's ability to display in GUI format no longer exists. The "options" window itself is no longer in GUI format, and all the rest of the screens presented in TB are the same as the Options screen - non GUI. In addition, my ability to change colors by using the "tools\options" window is very restricted. Please see screen captures of "tools\options" page and a screen capture of the New Email screen. So far I've re-installed Thunderbird - over the top of the previous installation - something I didn't really expect to make any difference (gee it felt good to be right for once). I simply cannot work out why this has happened and have spent quite some time to resolve - I cannot find any references on the web. I'd like to avoid having to do a full uninstall of TB, particularly because I'm not confident that it would work - so I'm seeking your help please. I'm hoping its just a settings file that needs to be replaced or something like that. As I said before, I'm not keen to take the uninstall path as I imagine I'll lose the email account and files as well. Not "end of the world" stuff as I'm using TB as the imap client/ interface for email so can set it up again. But there's a bit of email to pull down or sync so prefer to find a repair. Hope some one can rescue me please. Which of the config files did I screw up please?? Hope this all makes sense. Lou S

You could start by uninstalling TB 68, which won't affect your data in the profile folder, and reinstalling TB 60.8:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.8.0/win32/

The screens in your pictures look correct to me for a TB 68 setup. If you made some unknown change to the default, you could create a new profile with Profile Manager: Winkey+R, type thunderbird.exe -p If the new profile looks OK, you can copy mail and other data from the old profile to the new one.

Hi sfhowes Thank you for responding and your very clear advice. I uninstalled/removed TB 68 and installed TB 60.8.

Result: total success. All TB windows now look the way I expected and the ability to create HTML format email is back. All profile data now lives in TB 60.8 (and as you said, without any loss). After installation, email account opened, opened without issues - no need for me to do anything else.

Re TB 68 - I'll install TB 68 in a virtual environment at some stage in the future and do as you said. I really want to know what I did to create my problem so, I'll be more attentive to what I'm doing. I'll make sure that I'm able to revert to the "last known good configuration" and avoid making a dill of myself.  :-). But I doubt I'll be able to get to the stage that resulted in my original post.

I apologise that I forgot to mention in my initial post. Before I made the changes (Firefox/duckduckgo etc) I also created and applied a modified Windows 10 display theme. I copied and modified one of the original themes to try to "improve" contrast etc.

Reverted to original W10 theme and the colours and contrast are better overall. So perhaps my grumbling about Firefox was premature.

Again, thank you for resolving my and all the best. Lou S
