Why is firefox not picking up the system proxy settings?

In about:preferences / Network Settings / Settings /, I have Use system proxy setting selected. But firefox is completely ignoring them (https://curlmyip.net/ verifies that firefox is not not using the proxy), while every other browser I have tested (at least four of them) work completely fine with the system proxy settings.

I am running firefox 64.0.2 (64-bit) on KDE 5.13.5.
