Further information about firefox-patch.js malware
It would be so helpful if we could create an account to reply to existing threads rather than starting up a new one, but since we can't, I guess I'll have to use this method.
The firefox "urgent update" malware is definitely alive and well. Another company's website where this is being delivered up as a paid advertisement, and the one that I always get redirected to it from, is http://fiostrending.verizon.com/news/
These companies really need to choose a better source for their advertisements, if they insist on forcing them on their customers, if their sites are being hijacked by this malware!
Interestingly enough, the hit-and-run website that I'm being redirected to NEVER shows up in my browsing history.

This is not an official update, it's a scam. Please follow the steps in this Mozilla support article to report the issue:
I would also highly recommend scanning your system for infections. You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller
- AdwCleaner (for more info, see this alternate AdwCleaner download page)
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Wesley Branton, the OP knows it is not a official update as noted in post and in thread /questions/1129758
This is not due to malware on system. The disposable websites hosting the fake urgent Firefox-patch updates has been going on for a few months now as there is a list of them and discussion at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/712056
uBlock Origin is effective at blocking this particular type of exploit. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/
And IMO, the advertising networks that "spread" that crap, and seemingly do little to stop it, will get their comeuppance by having more users using an "ad blocker" cutting into their "views" and thus their bottom line. Couldn't happen to a more deserving group of rascals.
