What is the System Scan "robot man" icon that is poping up on my screen that started when I downloaded the latest version of Firefox?

HI, I hope you can assist me.

This started when I updated my Firefox version. (I received an auto alert to update my Firefox version that I responded to.)

Note Image attached. An icon of a robot man, upper torso, is in a blue circle and sets inside of a dark grey rectangle box. The message "System scan is recommended." appears along with options: cancel or start scan.

Is this an "add-on" with the new firefox version. Can you please clarify? I am hoping this was not something random that attached to the new Firefox version when I did the download. If this is an add-on can you explain its significance.

Please advise.

thank you! Kathy

Hi Kathy, this --

-- is definitely not something that comes with Firefox.

Could you check your Downloads list to see whether you can identify the source of any suspicious recent downloads? Reporting that may help others avoid fake updates.

Meanwhile, check out this thread on Apple's forums for how to remove the infection -- I don't have any personal experience with this or other solutions:

Have a look at this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MacKeeper_new_logo.jpg and then Google "MacKeeper". I don't know anything about this, I just searched for the image.
