why does google have a permanent content-prefs SQLITE file in my Firefox profile?

more options

When I looked at my cookies to remove some I noticed a Google file. I removed Google from my search engines and do not use anything to do with Google. I removed it and closed Firefox. When I opened it next time I looked at my cookies and it was back. I use Mozilla Firefox's start page to open my browser so I wondered what was going on. I opened that file and saw 4 different cookies. One of them was Prefs. I went to my Mozilla Firefox profile and found it there as an SQLITE file. I deleted it from there and it just showed up again the next time I opened my Firefox.

Is there a way to permanently remove this? If I wanted Google following my every move online I would just use Chrome. I do not want to be hit with advertisements on sites that mirror something I searched for online. I went up to check out riding mowers for my nephew and the next thing I know I am inundated with advertisements for riding mowers. I do NOT like this at all. Can anyone help with getting rid of this? Thanks

Based on what I have read:

You can have two completely different PREF cookies:

(1) A PREF cookie associated with accessing Google's SafeBrowsing service to download lists of phishing and malware domains. That is done automatically as long as you have that protection turned on.

(2) A PREF cookie saved/sent when making requests to Google websites during normal browsing. Site-specific cookie permissions apply to this cookie.

  • Cookies are stored in cookies.sqlite
  • Site-specific cookie permissions are stored in permissions.sqlite

These cookies are separated and do not cross over between the two contexts.

The content-prefs.sqlite database stores information such as the last folder into which you saved a download from a site. Not sure how that is involved here, but it's not related to cookies.

The content-prefs.sqlite file stores website dependent data like page zoom. In most cases this is the spellcheck.lang, but I'm not aware that the file stores cookie information.

You aren't confusing this with the permissions.sqlite file?

You can inspect and manage permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:

  • Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location/address bar
  • Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
  • Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

By the way, to create a site-specific block for Google cookies, set a block permission for google.com (which is the base domain for most Google services). You have several options for where to do that, but if you don't want to go to a Google page, here are two other ways:

(A) Options > Privacy > Exceptions button

You can access Options using either the "3-bar" menu button or the classic Tools menu.

If the Exceptions button is not displayed, change "Remember History" to "Use Custom Settings for History"

(B) Permissions Manager

Type or paste about:permissions in the address bar and press Enter to load the page. The left column will gradually fill with sites for which you have any cookies or permissions set. Type google in the search box above the list to filter it. Then select google.com and on the right side change the permission under Set Cookies.

After making these changes and removing existing Google cookies, you should not get any of the kind described under #2 in my earlier reply, but you probably will still get #1 based on other users' reports.
