My firefox will not open. I have been using Firefox without problems for years until yesterday. I have a Mac OS X 10.10.3. Every time i open Firefox, it immediately hangs or freezes. I have to go to my dock to "force quit" Firefox. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling the newest version Firefox 38.0.1 several times and no luck. I have tried to start Firefox in "safe mode" and as soon as my default screen opens (Yahoo.com) and when I click on anything, it immediately freezes again.

I am not able to get Firefox open enough before it freezes to be able to go into "preferences" to try and change or delete cookies or anything else.

Also, I had hundreds of bookmarks, if and when I get Firefox back and running, is there a way to retrieve those bookmarks?

Currently, I am forced to use Safari which is horrible. PLEASE HELP!

Thank you,

Chris Reppart

Is there not another way to fix FF on my main account on my computer instead of having to switch everything to a different account?

You are not creating another account on the computer. You are making a new user profile in Firefox with your own user account. Firefox can have many profiles under the same user account.

Try these two things;

1) Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Starting The Computer In Safe Mode;
Free Online Encyclopedia

2) Create a new, blank profile. Is the problem still there?

Fred,

Starting my computer in safe mode and then opening up Firefox did not work. It would not even open Firefox and it just immediately froze.

I did create a new account or profile and Firefox works just fine in this new account. So how do I fix my main account to have Firefox work on it?

Thanks, Chris

This is good news. Now that Firefox is working, you can copy / move some of your files from the old profile to the new one. Close Firefox.

Step One) Open your file browser to the old profile. What you need to do is to copy SOME files to your new profile. This will mean over-writing those same files in the new folder.

Mark, and COPY only these file from the old to the new profile. logins.json - places.sqlite - cookies.sqlite - search.json

Once you are done, open Firefox to the new profile. Any problems?

Step Two) You should redo your settings manually as your old settings file could be corrupt. (Sorry about that)

Step Three) Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} and install any add-ons and other things from here. Do Not try to get these from the old profile Just In Case.

Step Four) Restart Firefox. Are these any problems?

Good luck.

Did you try to set another page as the home page in case there is a problem with the startup page?

You can check the home page setting:

  • Firefox > Preferences > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Fred,

Is there not another way to fix FF on my main account on my computer instead of having to switch everything to a different account? I would prefer not to have to do that.

Cor-El, I can not even open FF up to get into the preferences to adjust any of that. Do you have any other suggestions that could help fix FF on a Mac?

Thank you for your guys help!

Fred!

Thank you so much! I apologize for not understanding what you were telling me to do. But I made a new FF profile, got all my info changed over and now it works with all my things saved! Thank you again! I feel like my life is complete again and I don't have to use Safari any more! Thank you again!!!!!!

Glad to help. These can also help;

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.
