Why does it say "Check for updates" when the action is to *do* the update? I didn't *want* to update - check means check not update!!!!!!

Check for updates for a long time now has been "Check for updates and if there is, install it" If you do not want to check for updates then do not check for updates ;)
That action was changed in Firefox 31 or 32, iirc. Now "Check for Updates" just checks and notifies that an update is available, and it mentions the new version number for the update.
