To the right of the two lines for the event start and end times there is an double arrow that ties the start and end times. This results in a fixed duration of the event. I can click on the top of the arrow and turn off that part but still does not allow me flexibility in event duration. How can I remove this fixed timing? Thank you for any help.

The arrow you talk about just locks the start and end times together if you move the start time. You can change the end time with no problem. Even with the two arrows touching. Clicking and separating the two arrows allows you to change either time without automatically changing the other one. You can change the default event length from 60 minutes if you like by going to AppMenu button, Options-Calendar-General
