"clear history when Firefox closes" I have the settings field greyed out ... how do I make it so I can click on it?
I just upgraded to 4...and the menus are not what you are telling me. I still have winXP/sp3.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

- You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
- To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
