I've been receiving pop up messages on firefox saying something like "Torguard won't work with apple updates going forward". Is this genuine as apple say they don't use pop up messages.

Does it sound similar like this? support.mozilla.org/questions/1542266 — i.e. it's system notifications, on your Mac most likely cropping up from top right?

That's most likely spam from a site that requested your permission in the past. The article Web Push notifications in Firefox has the details including a section on revoking said permissions.
