Every Time the Search Engine is Switched After a Query Has Already Been Searched, a New Tab Opens

Hello! I appreciate many niceties of the 148 update, but i'm having an issue resulting in many more tabs on Android mobile than I usually generate. When I search something and then want to sesrch the same query again using a different search engine (by selecting a different search engine from the tab bar menu) a new tab opens, leaving the query via the previous search engine open, and the current query of the current search engine in a new tab with focus. I'm aware that this behavior can be modified on desktop, but there is no such setting for android.

I would really love for this behavior to be reverted or optional, as it's made it so I need to clear out many tabs of duplicate queries (on different sesrch engines) and it makes me avoid using the built-in search engine switcher to prevent generating more tabs :( (which sucks because I have like 10+ custom searches and they're very useful!)

i had been able to revert to the original behavior (new searches staying in the same tab) by turning off the new featureset in the "secret settings", but since the redesigned toolbar options have fully rolled out, i can't revert them and the errant "new tab for every single search" behavior is back.

i would really appreciate feedback on this since i can't be the only one with this issue; maybe my verbiage is poor to describe the issue? in the end it means i'm using the "close all tabs" function almost daily, which i never used to do and it would take me weeks to reach 99+ tabs; now i reach that number in only a day or two of use :(

Hi,

Thank you so much for reaching out! I've brought this up with the product team and they've filled bug 2045734 to track the issue. While I can't share an ETA for the fix yet, please feel free to follow the bug to get updates directly.

And once again, thank you!

thank you so much!!! (✿^‿^)v i thought this was so specific it would never get its day in the sun.

i should also note that submitting a non-URI query to the address bar in an existing tab (with a webpage already loaded) also creates a new tab, not only if i'm performing a duplicate (or modified) search. i think this is caused by the same behavior change that causes new tabs for "duplicate" searches, but i wanted to be sure to explicitly mention that bit just in case one of these situations is intended behavior!

regardless if this is intended behavior, it is a change in behavior that significantly impacts my browsing experience with an overwhelming abundance of tabs (when i would really prefer to keep each search breadcrumbs in the tab history of the back button if i need to navigate back)

Great observation! Mentioned that in the bug

thanks so much to everyone who helped with this! it's greatly improved my workflow to more closely resemble search functionality on desktop (^ᴗ^)v i'm no longer drowning in tabs <3

Oh, I've almost missed this! Great to hear that the issue is resolved now
