Repeated bookmarks

I appear to have my bookmarks duplicated. Bookmark Menu list of bookmarks, bookmark 1 

                                                           bookmark 2
                                                           bookmark 3 etc
                                                           ........
                                                           bookmark 1
                                                           bookmark 2
                                                           bookmark 3 etc

At a glance, the repeated bookmarks are the same, but I could have filed a new bookmark in either set. What can I do to stop these duplicates?
