How to reproduce the bug: Jump to the address bar, and then press shift, ctrol, alt or windows_start, you can see the address getting deleted. You can also see it in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel Online, it just deletes the cell, or a selection of multiple cells. --Interestingly on Google Docs it doesn't delete but just move the cursor to the first character when a string is selected.

It happens only once per mouse click, or focus change

What I expect: Shift, Control or any mod key should not delete content or move a cursor

Thanks!

Oh, it deletes the content here in the reply input field, unlike on Google Docs.

Did you try to reboot the computer ?

It is possible that some status keys have the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed. Try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this. If this doesn't help, close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Thank you so much for the reply cor-el, I have tried all of them in vain except the userC*.css stuff because I believe I don't have them --I tried searching for them in the profile directory but found none in the pattern of '*userContent*' or '*userChrome*'

Pressing all the status keys a few times, rebooting the system, launching firefox in troubleshoot mode, turning off hardware acceleration, switching from and back to the default system theme all of them didn't fix the problem..

I run Firefox 122.0 (64-bit) from ppa:mozillateam/ppa, upon sway 1.8.1-2 from Ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) so it is not the common combination of `Firefox from Ubuntu + Gnome/KDE from Ubuntu`.

Sorry, I missed that you are on Ubuntu Linux.

You can try other Firefox versions like Firefox from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution to see if it behaves differently.

I removed the Firefox I was using and then installed from the official Mozilla repository in vain.

The original firefox I was using was from PPA from Mozilla team, and the version was:

 122.0+build2-0ubuntu0.23.10.1~mt1

The new firefox I got from the official repository is version:

 122.0~build2

One thing personally interesting is that it had a slight different dependency list: -{xul-ext-ubufox and/or libdbusmenu-glib4 and/or libdbusmenu-gtk3-4} +libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 --It doesn't seem to be useful for debugging though.

I just realized that this bug is actually way worse than I thought it was. up,down, left, right arrow keys also trigger the weird symptom, same in the both of the versions 122.0~build2 and 122.0+build2-0ubuntu0.23.10.1~mt1

sway 1.8.1-2 from Ubuntu 23.10

Visit about:support in the address bar and check the value of "Window Protocol". If it is "wayland", try setting the environment variable MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0, if it is "xwayland" try setting MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1.

`MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0` didn't prevent firefox from launching in wayland, but `GDK_BACKEND=x11` did. And it fixed the problem.

But I'd like to keep having Firefox in wayland. --One of the reasons why I would like to keep using wayland is the Korean input method I use refuses to support typing in X even it does read the environment variable XMODIFIERS='@im=kime'.

Thank you anyway for the help, at least I have a makeshift solution that I would use when I need to work on spreadsheets. :)

I've found out that it happens in Libreoffice Calc as well, but when I tried to reproduce the same bug in Libreoffice Writer it didn't happen.

I guess it's a bug in sway, libwlroots11 or something on Ubuntu 23.10.

EDIT: the bug occurs only in the top cell editing bar in Libreoffice Calc, not in the big screen of cells, so you'll be fine as long as you edit a cell in the middle of the screen. which in my opinion is better since some words are colored there.

It turns out the bug is coming from the input method I'm using called kime

I think I'm having a similar issue to you, but I don't know if your resolution works for me. I'm trying to use Excel online. Not long ago, it worked fine for what I'm doing, but recently I noticed cell contents being deleted if I select it and then hitting almost any other key, including the arrow keys, Ctrl, Alt, Enter.

Running Firefox 124.0.2 on Ubuntu 22.04

Any suggestions on what to do or where to look for answers?
