On starting FF now there is no focus, so other prog's can't e.g. open FF then download or enter a link, etc. directly. That is is a huge nuisance. Also Ctl+H or B (History or Bookmarks) don't work until the cursor is clicked within FF which is a major concentration breaker. Is there something in the settings to give FF focus when it opens like it has always done in the past? I don't like changing things in there without guidance. It's not just me, my wife's laptop is having the same issues.

Thank you Dropa and cor-el, but your suggestions didn't affect the problem.

I decided to disable my add-ons one by one and restart FF each time. I noticed that FF's border and the Exit icon were flashing with their "focused" colors for a tiny fraction of a second when FF was restarted. Eventually I disabled the download manager add-on I use and Voila the problem disappeared! I then re-enabled all add-ons except the download manager and FF remains fixed.

It looks like the download add-on is grabbing focus as soon as it loads in which must be milliseconds after FF starts. I will now advise the maker of that add-on via the FF system and I'm sure he will sort it quickly.

Thanks for your assistance : )

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.
