Trying to bookmark a website DIRECTLY TO AN EXISTING FOLDER. I was able to do this until I updated to 68.4.1esr. Now it won't let me "choose" a folder. All I can do is book mark it and then open bookmarks, show all bookmarks, find the bookmarked page and move it to the folder. Seems like a heck of a lot of unnecessary work to add a bookmark. I've searched the support site w/no luck. I would welcome step by step instructions for non-techie people.  :-)

hi, in the screenshot you've provided, are you able to expand the bookmarks menu folder through the ">" sign in front of it?

more options

No, I clicked on every ">" Also clicked on the up/down arrows as per screen shots. 1st - "choose" options; 2nd ">" options;

I can't even figure out how to change the default from 'other bookmarks' to 'bookmarks menu.'

The screenshot shows a font problem.

This likely means that Firefox isn't able to access the requested font and falls back to a 'last resort' font that shows all glyphs as a '?' or an 'A'.

You can check for sandbox security issues when Firefox has a problem to access fonts installed locally.

You can set this pref to 2 or 1 on the about:config page to reduce the sandbox security level.

  • security.sandbox.content.level = 1
  • close and restart Firefox to make the change effective.

If '1' still doesn't have effect then try '0' to disable the sandbox.

If this didn't work then undo/reverse the change and reset the pref via the right-click context menu to the default value.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Thank you Cor-el. I went to the links, but they're waaaaay over my head & make no sense to me whatsoever.

I just want to be able to do what I did before I updated, which is save a website directly to a folder without having to go to bookmarks, 'show all bookmarks', find the just bookmarked website (which usually involves doing a search) & move it to an existing folder.

Re the font problem you mentioned, as you saw, I posted a thread about that today & commented in thread that was started in Oct.

I'm completely lost technically re both issues. I'm sorry to say that I can't make sense of any of the links that you so kindly provided.

This particular issue started only after I updated. The question mark in a box issue started a couple of days before I updated. It's what caused me to update. Nothing else has changed or been done differently on my end that I'm aware of.

I really wish mozilla would provide simply written (jargon free) instructions for non-techie people that include locations for every option involved in the process. Diagrams, flowcharts and instructions are useless if we aren't familiar w/the jargon (like sandbox & child process - does not compute. :p) ) and/or don't have a clue as to locations of referenced things to do like 'element button,' html, 'rules pane', etc. Photos don't help because they don't show how to access them.

The "Edit This Bookmark" dialog that opens if you click the highlighted star has a checkbox with "Show editor when saving" (shortcut key in the dialog is Alt+S). This item is at the bottom just above "Remove Bookmark" and "Done".

See "How do I change the name or location of a bookmark?"

You can look at this extension if you want to change the default folder for saving a new bookmark.

Thank you! On on my way out, but will check later and let you know.

Cor-el, I just changed the sandbox thing to 1 and it fixed the question mark in the box that overwrote words & emojis issues. But didn't do anything for the bookmark process.

I looked at the other two links and they don't seem to address either changing the default folder or say anything about having an option to choose existing folders.

This link https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/bookmarks-firefox shows a photo of the bookmark window & it looks exactly like the one I get. It doesn't matter which up or down arrow I click, I never get the option to select a folder that I've created. All I get is the option to change from other bookmarks, bookmark menu or bookmark tools. I've clicked on all of them but there isn't an option to select a specific folder. I've tried bookmarking & going in & editing, but still don't get the option to select a folder.

Right now, my only option is to bookmark, open show all bookmarks, find the link & physically move it to the folder. I will check out the add-on & let you know how that works.

I just can't believe that the option to save to specific folders no longer exists. :-(

I installed the add-on and nothing changed. Restarted firefox and nothing changed. No instructions on how to use it. Checked it in tools/add-ons & no options for changing default or info on how to save to folders.

Update: After doing several searches, I finally found instructions on how to get to the preferences for the add-on. It did allow me to change the default main folder back to bookmarks menu. HOWEVER, no options to access specific folders found in the bookmarks menu. So still having to do a ridiculous amount of manual labor to bookmark something.  :-((

The Folder line in "Edit This Bookmark" has two drop-down arrows. The first arrow is in the field that shows the name of the folder opens a drop-down list that shows the main bookmarks folders and some folders you have used recently. The second arrow that might be hard to notice is further to the right of the folder field. That second arrow shows a tree list of all bookmarks folders with the folder where this bookmark is saved selected and where you can select another folder to move the bookmark to this folder.

See "How do I change the name or location of a bookmark?"

Thank you, Cor-el! I haven't had any success with any of the arrow other than the option of one of my created folders. The tree never opened up. I just tried it again and the outside arrow gave me the tree list of all my folders. Yaaaaaaay!!! It now looks like when I first I bookmark, I won't have the option to choose a folder. But once its bookmarked, I can edit and click on the second arrow & move it to the folder of my choice.  :-)

You're welcome and glad that you found your way around creating bookmarks.

Thanks again.

Well, that was short lived. Today when I tried to bookmark, the tree list contained two folders. They aren't even the most recently used folders. I am including a series of photos showing the results after clicking on each one of the arrows.

Another thing you might notice is that the option to cancel or save is all but absent in most of the pics. This has been happening in various ways for at least the last year, no matter what version of ff I use. It not only happens w/in ff processes but also on other websites when I fill in info that needs to be saved & when completing the captcha process. I can only surmise that its because ff is only barely compatible with mac OS and probably only THE most current version which is really inconvenient for many people who using something other than Mojave &/or Catalina. Since I don't have this issue on safari, it would appear that is is solely a ff issue. It doesn't matter that I have reinstalled ff and my OS several times in the past.
