Thunderbird keeps hanging since I moved over to Windows 7
It goes every time I try to do anything with my emails and also keeps creating new nstmp folders- whatever they are. It doesn't crash as such because the curser is still active, but it also takes all my other programs with it and I have to keep forcing a restart.

The creation of nstmp folders can indicate interrupted compacting processes. See this page for info and how you may be able to resolve and prevent it, and this page for more about compacting. Also, see this question.
In short, stop the compacting temporarily, remove the nstmp files, (move messages to other folders) and review your compacting preferences.
Did you import your profile from another OS and if so, did you check all folder locations in Thunderbird’s settings? There could be a preference set that does not match, causing the issue. Be sure to check every field in Account Settings and click OK.
