free email is not free

First you have to know the difference between an email client software and an email provider.
Thunderbird is client software and is free to use. Email providers offer email service and some are free and some are not. I assume you selected get new email service and was offered a new address from ghandi. They are not free. They are a 3rd party vendor with an agreement with Thunderbird to offer personalized email addresses. Gmail, yahoo and gmx are a few free providers. You have to have an existing, active email address with a provider before using Thunderbird and select use existing mail service when setting up Thunderbird.
