When at the Walmart.com website and I type in extension cord, I get this:

Where exactly do you type 'extension cord' (assuming this is your search term)? My best guess what's happeneing is that you type it into the Firefox search bar, and Yahoo is your default search engine. In that case Firefox does exactly what you told it to do.

Try to type your search term into a search form on the Walmart site itself. Alternatively refine your search string and include 'Walmart'.

I am typing extension cord in the Walmart search box within the Walmart website page not the Firefox search box at the top.

Do you ever notice this problem with other pages, suddenly ending up on a search page? I would suspect a add-on is causing these symptoms, possibly in connection with external software.

Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other hijackers. I know it seems long, but it's really not that bad.

(For Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10; XP is somewhat different)

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

• Ctrl+Shift+a
• "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
• in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
  firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. All extensions are optional; none come with Firefox.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

Hi christ1, in this case you may notice that the search URL is different from Firefox's normal search engine plugin for Yahoo:

Yahoo uses these parameters to track the sources of search traffic, and paid affiliates have a financial incentive to use add-ons and other hacks to drive traffic through their affiliate links. I've never found a simple reverse lookup for those parameters to find the specific abuser, but in this case, a search of the bolded section turns up a reference to "LookSafe" malware. I think malware cleanup should be our general recommendation in these cases, even if the search doesn't provide specific clues.

Thanks for your help. I tried other sites and have not had this happen. This appeared to happen only when I was on the Walmart Website. It appears to have cleared up today.

Yesterday I ran Microsoft Safety Scanner Tool which took hours. It said Malware Removed: BrowserModifier:/Win32/DefaultTab. Perhaps it did the trick.
