Can't sign in, can't change password. What do I need to do? Thanks for the help.

We were on an extended vacation and when I went to go on Thunderbird A box came up to sign in and when that didn't work try a new password which didn't work either. I only use Thunderbird for mail.

You might need to check with your provider to see if you need to use different server setting when you are not on their network. That is usually the issue when people have trouble when traveling.

I think the first step in this kind of situation is to visit the email provider's website and try to log in to your email account there. If that doesn't work, you need to go through whatever process they offer to change your password to re-establish your connection to it.

Alternatively, your experience will tell you that your login, password and so forth are all correct.

Having logged in you'll be able to check if your messages are all intact.

Then you can go back to Thunderbird confident that you know your credentials.

Can you see any other material in Thunderbird? Old messages? Sent folder? Address Book?

I have assumed you went away and came back; Airmail has taken the alternative reading that you had or are having trouble while away from home.

You'll need to clear up which of these is actually your situation. I suspect Airmail has nailed it. ;-)

Thanks for answering so quickly so maybe you have an answer to the question below. I should have mentioned that we were back home and it was the desktop that the mail would not connect. Somehow, I got it working but it is still making me sign in every time I go on Thunderbird. It finally let me change the password . I checked the box for letting the 'password manager' remember the password but it still makes me sign in each time. How and where can I find the password manager?

In general, you delete an entry here and this should cause Thunderbird to stop and ask you for a password when it can't find the one it needs. Be aware that it stores passwords for both sending (outgoing) and collecting (incoming) messages. It's usually as well to remove both. The search box at the top will help find all occurrences of a particular name, address or server.

As in many such cases, after making a change here, it's best to close and re-open Thunderbird to make sure your changes are actually enacted.

I should have stated it was a problem on my home desktop. I finally managed to change the password but I have to do that evert time I open Thunderbird. I checked the box for the 'password manager' remember the password but it doesn't. How do I get that to work? Thanks for your quick feedback.

Thank you. Thunderbird is working fine and doesn't ask for a password every time. I appreciate your help. It's nice to know that there are people out there willing to solve problems.
