I clicked to open an email and it opened up numerous web tabs of the site. Too numerous to count. it also opened a number of its own tabs and I had trouble getting back to inbox. When I got back TB gave up the ghost and disappeared. Now can't open the program.

Sounds like you clicked on a link in an email and have got a virus or malware on your computer.

Start computer in Safe Mode. Run full scans on computer using whatever anti-virus product you use. Malwarebytes is also a good program for checking out malware.
